BWI presidium calls for global action and solidarity

The Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) recently concluded its presidium on 14-15 February 2024 in Geneva, creating the needed momentum to promote further global union solidarity amid ongoing global crises. In a message to its affiliates, partners and allies, BWI’s presidium issued a special newsletter stressing the critical importance of labour unity and collective action in addressing threats to democracy, peace, and trade union rights worldwide.

Reflecting on the challenges of 2023, BWI’s presidium deliberated on a range of crises, from conflicts in various regions to economic downturns and climate emergencies. BWI also observed political shifts towards isolationism and right-wing ideologies in many parts of the world, leading to the erosion of trade union rights and basic freedoms. Despite these challenges, BWI remains steadfast in its commitment to defend democracy, peace, and labour rights in various fronts.

Looking forward to 2024, BWI announced several ambitious initiatives, including "The Global Youth Festival" in Türkiye, to empower young trade unionists, "The Women in Trades Initiatives" promoting gender equality in workplaces, and "The Amazon Campaign and the Rainforest Workers Alliance" dedicated to protect workers' rights and the environment. Additionally, “The First BWI Workers' Summit on Climate Justice," will highlight the intersection of labour rights and environmental sustainability; and “The Global Organising Academy,” which will equip workers with the skills and knowledge needed to advocate for their rights effectively.

Amid unprecedented challenges, BWI calls upon its affiliates and fellow global union federations to stand in solidarity for a future built on justice, peace, and equality. As the global labour movement navigates turbulent waters, BWI remains committed to being a beacon of hope, inspiring workers to unite and advocate for a better future for all.
