“Framtidskraft”: SEF holds Congress

Carrying the message “Future Power,” the Swedish Electricians’ Union (SEF) held its Congress from 7 to 9 June 2026 at the People's House in Stockholm, Sweden. The event was attended by around 132 delegates from across the country, as well as international guests from the United States and Europe, including representatives from the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) and its sister organisation, the European Federation of Building and Wood Workers (EFBWW).

“We want to take this opportunity to thank you for being on the frontline, side by side with BWI affiliates from Ukraine to Palestine, from Kenya to the Philippines, and from Nepal to Brazil,” said BWI Regional Representative for Europe Genevieve Kalina.

The first day of the congress focused on internal matters, particularly statutory amendments and motions. One example is that student members will no longer need to apply to become regular members after completing their studies, regardless of whether they have found their first job or not. There were also discussions on introducing a cap on affiliation fees and creating a new fee category for members undergoing basic military training. A contribution of SEK 150 from 1 January 2027 was approved.

During the coming congress period, SEF will focus on recruiting new members and strengthening its presence in workplaces in order to be closer to its members. Its objective is to reach 21,000 members by 31 December 2030, sign at least 1,500 collective agreements, and establish a presence in at least half of all workplaces. It was clearly stated that the union wants to empower its members. Through organising, solidarity, and joint action, the union aims to be seen as both militant and solution-oriented, demonstrating that there is strength in coming together.

“The industries and professions that Elektrikerna organises are crucial to the development of society, from electrification and industry to the energy transition and new technology. With Framtidskraft, we look ahead with strength, pride, and a desire to develop together,” the SEF said. However, the union also recognises that it must implement a cultural change while continuing the struggle for higher wages, better pensions, shorter working hours, and a safe working environment.

Urban Pettersson was re-elected as President of the union until his retirement at the end of 2026. “We have started to move forward and have changed the organisation. It is important that we continue on the path we have started,” he said.

Per-Ola Nilsson, who was also re-elected as Deputy President, will take over as President on 1 January 2027. A new election will take place in 2027. Mikael Pettersson was elected Head of Negotiations. Among the members elected to the Board is BWI European Committee Youth President Jesper Ekström.
