Pan-Europe: Regional Organizing Academy gathers labour leaders to build stronger unions
On 22–23 June 2028, the Regional Organizing Academy for Pan-Europe took place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, bringing together 20 trade union leaders and activists from Georgia, Latvia, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan. The event provided a platform for participants to develop regional organising strategies, exchange experiences, and strengthen a network of organizers across the region.
Throughout the two-day academy, participants discussed the challenges and opportunities of adopting an organizing approach within trade unions operating in similar contexts. Trade union leaders acknowledged that introducing organising methods is not an easy task when institutional memory is still strongly influenced by the traditions and practices of Soviet trade unionism. Nevertheless, participants agreed that organising remains the most effective path for unions seeking to grow, strengthen their influence, and build collective power among workers.
The academy also provided an opportunity to review existing organising experiences from across the Pan-European region. Participants identified several successful campaigns and initiatives that demonstrate the potential of organising-based approaches and can serve as valuable examples for other unions looking to strengthen their membership and workplace presence.
As a practical outcome of the academy, participants developed concrete organising plans tailored to their national contexts and organizational priorities. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining close cooperation beyond the event. Participants agreed that building truly organised trade unions requires continuous exchange of experience, mutual support, and sustained regional solidarity.
The Regional Organising Academy concluded with a strong commitment to further collaboration and the development of a vibrant regional network of trade union organisers dedicated to building stronger and more representative unions across the Pan-European region.
