Armenia: BWI holds mission to Yerevan, builds partnership with unions

BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson and Global Gender and Projects Coordinator Anna Andreeva, on 1-2 July 2026, conducted a mission to Armenia to strengthen relations with the Confederation of Trade Unions of Armenia (CTUA) and sectoral trade unions representing forestry and construction workers. Meetings focused on organising strategies, social dialogue, collective bargaining, and opportunities to expand BWI's presence in the country. Both the Republican Union of Trade Unions of Agricultural and Forest Systems Workers (Agro-Forest Trade Union) and the Construction and Building Materials Workers Union expressed their intention to work with BWI, marking an important step towards stronger international solidarity.

The mission highlighted significant opportunities in Armenia's forestry sector. Discussions with the Agro-Forest Trade Union and the management and trade union of Hayantar, the state non-profit organization, focused on improving working conditions, strengthening trade union representation, and ensuring that workers' rights are integrated into national reforestation and climate programmes. BWI shared international experiences on forestry organizing, including community-based forest management, and proposed supporting a symbolic "Trade Union Greenhouse" to contribute to Armenia's forest restoration efforts while demonstrating the labour movement's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Meetings with the Construction and Building Materials Workers Union and the Union of Builders of Armenia underlined the rapid growth of the country's construction sector, driven by major infrastructure investments and residential development. Particular attention was given to the North–South Road Corridor Investment Programme, financed by several international financial institutions. BWI presented opportunities to cooperate on labour inspections, social dialogue, and organizing through its agreements with development banks. The discussions also explored preparations for the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which Armenia will co-host with Georgia, as an opportunity to promote decent work and strengthen trade union presence across major construction projects.

The mission confirmed strong momentum for expanding BWI's activities in Armenia. Agreed follow-up actions include facilitating exchanges with forestry unions from other countries, exploring labour monitoring opportunities in internationally financed projects and developing joint campaigns around the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The visit also demonstrated the growing interest of Armenian trade unions in deepening cooperation with European and global trade union organisations and strengthening social dialogue based on international labour standards.
