MALAYSIA CIVIL SOCIETY SLAMS MYANMAR JUNTA LEADER’S VISIT
We, the undersigned Myanmar Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) based in Malaysia, alongside the broader Myanmar diaspora and the people of Myanmar, Malaysian and regional CSOs issue this joint statement to unequivocally reject and forcefully condemn the visit of the illegitimate military junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, to Malaysia.
1. Total Lack of Legitimacy and Constitutional Authority
Min Aung Hlaing possesses zero democratic legitimacy, constitutional mandate, or legal authority to represent the sovereign nation of Myanmar or its citizens. He is not a recognized or elected President, nor a legitimate Head of State, given the widely acknowledged fact that the elections were a sham . Having unlawfully seized power through an illegal military coup d'état, he has plunged Myanmar into an unprecedented multi-dimensional political, economic, and humanitarian crisis.
2. Perpetration of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
As a bloodstained war criminal leading an oppressive military regime, Min Aung Hlaing and his junta continue to commit systemic war crimes and egregious crimes against the people of Myanmar. These include persistent indiscriminate airstrikes targeting innocent civilians, schools, medical facilities, and places of worship, alongside the widespread arbitrary detention, systematic torture, and extrajudicial killings of thousands of political prisoners.
3. Severe Diplomatic Repercussions and Profound Shame for Malaysia
We explicitly caution the Government of Malaysia that engaging with or hosting this junta leader yields absolutely zero political or economic benefit. Granting a formal audience or diplomatic platform to a tyrant will result in profound international shame and severely tarnish Malaysia's standing as a champion of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. Furthermore, engaging with the head of an illegitimate regime directly violates the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC), bestows unearned political legitimacy upon a non-compliant military regime, destabilizes regional security, and exacerbates the humanitarian catastrophe.
4. Key Demands
To the Government of Malaysia:
- Refuse All Formal Recognition: Deny any official recognition, state hospitality, high-level reception, or diplomatic platform to the illegal junta leader.
- Stand in Solidarity: Maintain a resolute, unwavering stance in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of democracy, justice, and fundamental human rights.
To the Myanmar Military Junta:
- Immediate and Unconditional Release of All Political Prisoners: Cease all arbitrary detentions and immediately release State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, and all arbitrarily detained political prisoners.
- Immediate Cessation of Hostilities: Halt all military operations, indiscriminate airstrikes, and acts of violence targeted at civilian populations.
Call to Action
We urgently appeal to the Government of Malaysia, the international community, and global human rights institutions to steadfastly support the Spring Revolution and the collective efforts of the Myanmar people to establish a genuine, peaceful, and federal democratic union. Enduring regional peace, security, and economic prosperity are inextricably linked to a free, stable, and democratic Myanmar.
