US MIDTERMS: WORKING PEOPLE PUSH BACK AGAINST TRUMP AND THE FAR RIGHT
The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) congratulates the American people for making their voices heard in the United States midterm elections. Their strong electoral pushback against US President Donald Trump and his political allies sends a powerful message: no leader or party is above the people, and no government is beyond our challenge.
BWI celebrates the many members of its US affiliates who worked tirelessly to secure a victory for working people. The Blue Wave was powered by the collective effort and organisation of many, notably the solidarity, strength, and mobilisation of trade unionists. It represents a victory for ordinary people, particularly workers, migrant communities, people of colour, minorities, and other marginalised sectors whose rights, dignity, and livelihoods have come under repeated attack under Trump. It also reflects growing opposition to wars of aggression, including those in Gaza and Iran.
American voters now join working people in Brazil, Hungary, Serbia, Sweden and beyond in a growing global pushback against authoritarianism, far-right extremism and warmongering. It is a collective rejection of leaders and parties that divide communities, attack workers’ rights and undermine democracy.
BWI stands firmly with working people everywhere. When we unite, we can challenge those in power, defend democracy and defeat authoritarianism.
