Call for Action: Pledge for BWI Manifesto to protect migrant workers in an overheating planet!

Published on 21 November 2023

This 30 November, world leaders will set foot in Dubai for the United Nations Global Climate Conference (COP28). In the wake of its “Heat Up Workers Rights, Not the Planet!” campaign, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) will highlight the pressing need to protect workers’ health and safety in the global climate emergency.

The right to healthy and safe workplaces is a fundamental human right. It is time to make it concrete for millions of construction, building materials, wood and forestry workers who are affected by workplace heat stress and other extreme weather events.

Amidst the pressing global campaign for climate justice, we recognize that the fight for a sustainable future is intrinsically linked with the struggle for migrant rights and against increased gender-based violence driven by climate-induced disasters.

We ask governments and other stakeholders to take a moment to reflect on what is like to work under extreme heat and other severe weather events for millions of construction workers and to pledge support for the BWI Manifesto to create a world where every worker is safe and protected.

Change is possible if we act together.
