The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) Africa and Middle East Regional Women’s Committee (RWC) met online on 2 September 2026, bringing together 10 committee members and leaders from across the region. The meeting was presided over by Georgina Smedley, BWI AME Regional Women’s Chair.

In his opening remarks, BWI Regional Representative Garikanai Shoko underscored the vital role of women trade unionists in advancing workplace equality. This was echoed by a video message from Marta Pujadas, Chair of the BWI International Women’s Committee, who also expressed solidarity with and support for Chair Georgina Smedley’s leadership.

Reports from the Secretariat and sub-regions highlighted the socio-political and economic challenges facing women, alongside key affiliate wins in fighting workplace violence and harassment. While acknowledging funding constraints in implementing the 2025 resolutions, the RWC committed to exploring creative resourcing solutions.

The committee also reviewed preparations for BWI’s 6th World Congress, as well as the upcoming Global Women’s Conference, which will carry the theme “Women Forward: Breaking Barriers for Safe and Equal Workplaces.” AME women’s representation at Congress is nearing its target, with women leaders from every sub-region set to participate in November 2026.

The meeting concluded with the committee reconfirming its five-year priorities adopted in 2025, without changes. Closing remarks from RWC First Vice Chairperson Teresa Njeri and Chair Georgina Smedley celebrated the unity and resilience of trade union women across the region.
