Malaysia: Joint social audits build trust and better workplaces in Faber-Castell
At Faber-Castell’s operations in Malaysia, workers’ representatives credit joint social audits under the International Framework Agreement (IFA) with strengthening workers’ voices and driving practical improvements, including free personal protective equipment, clearer emergency exits, better machine safeguards, accessible chemical safety information, health screening, clearer wage and overtime records, and improved accommodation closer to the factory for migrant workers. The experience demonstrates how the partnership between Faber-Castell, BWI and IG Metall can strengthen constructive labour relations while addressing everyday concerns that affect workers’ safety and wellbeing.
Social audits provide a safe space for workers, including migrants, to raise concerns without fear of retaliation. Engagement with BWI and Faber-Castell headquarters connects local concerns with the company’s international commitments and creates opportunities for joint problem-solving. They also strengthen collective bargaining, union leaders said. By documenting concerns and identifying corrective actions, audits give workers and management a clearer basis for negotiations, follow-up and resolving difficult issues through constructive dialogue.
The audits also extend the IFA’s benefits across Faber-Castell’s supply chain. In Malaysia, auditors recognised a supplier’s provision of equal opportunities and training for local and migrant workers as an example of inclusive labour practices. Social audits help suppliers improve working conditions, build trust with business partners, and give Faber-Castell greater confidence that its labour commitments are upheld beyond its own facilities.
For workers, seeing concerns addressed and commitments followed through can strengthen trust, morale, and belonging. For management, worker participation provides valuable insight into conditions on the ground. Identifying problems early can help prevent avoidable disputes and operational disruption, while safer workplaces and stronger cooperation support long-term resilience.
BWI recognises Faber-Castell’s contribution to this longstanding partnership, particularly during challenging economic periods when workers’ confidence and open communication are especially important. Continued support for social dialogue is an investment that helps the company navigate change.
The local union has expressed a clear wish for the audits to continue and be strengthened, citing their effective use of resources while preserving meaningful worker participation, international involvement, and consistent follow-up. They said that their experience shows what can be achieved when workers, unions, and management engage openly and act together. Continuing joint social audits will help protect these gains, strengthen workplace trust and carry the partnership forward.
