Colours of empowerment: Women workers stand against gender-based violence
In the context of the International Women’s Day mobilisation dedicated to eliminating gender-based violence in male-dominated workplaces, BWI and FNV Netherlands are continuing the “Colours of Empowerment” initiative in India.
This inspiring initiative aims to empower women workers by supporting their access to professional skills in the painting trades. It brings together women and men trade union members from Europe and India, fostering cross-border solidarity through hands-on training while directly contributing to the improvement of social infrastructure in India.
“Colours of Empowerment” powerfully demonstrates that mutual respect, inclusion, and zero tolerance for violence and harassment in painters’ workplaces are not only essential for dignity and safety, but also make work more enjoyable, fair, and accessible for everyone. By breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, the initiative shows how decent work and equality go hand in hand.
This year, FNV and BWI invite women painters from BWI-affiliated organisations to participate in the “Colours of Empowerment” initiative in India. The programme will include practical, hands-on training focused on painting existing school infrastructure—specifically, a union-run primary school in Village Dhanoli, District Agra, and will take place from 13 to 18 March 2026.
